Protect your home and roof from severe storms with wind mitigation

Hurricanes and other types of severe wind storms pose a serious problem for many homes throughout the United States. These powerful winds can cause vicious damage to the entire home, but the roof often takes the brunt of the damage since it’s your home’s first line of defense. A strong gust can easily remove shingles or hurl debris into them, causing cracks, broken skylights, and other costly damage. Any damage these winds can cause will then leave your home vulnerable to water damage.

Thankfully, there are ways to prepare and protect your home from the threat of strong winds. These wind mitigation techniques come in a variety of forms, including:

• Roof-to-wall connections
• Gable-end bracing
• Secondary water resistance/roof sealant
• Window/door opening protection

While these techniques all work differently, most either serve to add bracing to the structure in order to resist strong winds or cover vulnerable parts of the roof, like skylights, in order to prevent them from breaking when under pressure.
