In 1850, Chicago, Illinois implemented the nation's first Integrated Sewer System after unsanitary dumping in Lake Michigan, which also provided the City’s drinking water, caused a deadly illness among the people, claiming nearly 75,000 lives. Since then, modern plumbing systems have firmly taken root in America, and around the world, leaving outhouses and chamber pots an uncomfortable memory of the past.

In a perfect world, these systems would always work perfectly, but sometimes the flow of material slows or increases too much, leading to sinking solids and the formation of blockages. Many times, these issues are caused by non-degradable material such as sanitary wipes, tampons, cotton swabs, and paper towels, as well as grease and some drain cleaners or other caustic substances.
