Brick is incredibly durable and long lasting, but the mortar holding the bricks together is rarely as long lasting or durable. Unfortunately, issues with the mortar can go on to threaten the structural integrity of the bricks themselves as the holes and gaps leave room for water to infiltrate.

The good news is that a professional contractor can easily repair this mortar using a process known as brick repointing. This is usually a four step process where your contractor will:

1. Carefully remove the old mortar
2. Wet the surface
3. Mix new mortar
4. Install that new mortar into the openings

This process is quick and easy when done by a professional and will leave you with a sturdy brick wall once more.

Enhance the look of your brick structures with tuckpointing

If the mortar in your brick wall is starting to deteriorate, tuckpointing is a way to improve your home’s appearance while replacing the mortar, making it an alternative to simple repointing. This method is particularly popular on older homes where it helps to restore old brick walls to their original look.

What does this process involve? First, the old mortar is removed and replaced by a new one. This new mortar is carefully selected to match the color of the surrounding bricks. A thin line of putty that contrasts with the color of the brick is then installed in the middle of this mortar. This creates the appearance of new masonry (thanks to the seemingly narrow lines) and helps boost the look of the brick wall.
