A brief history of lawnmowers

In times gone by, there was no such thing as a lawnmower--and only the very rich and important had anything that could be considered a lawn anyway. To groom large patches of land, typically grazing animals would be released, and workers with large, heavy scythes would come through to trim down the jagged lengths of grass left behind. This changed in 1830, when an English inventor named Edwin Budding invented the first push mower, intended for grooming sports fields and grassy areas in gardens.

For most of human history, we’ve lived close together, either in rural farming communities or within large cities. As times changed, and wealth became more available to all, we created a new normal--the iconic houses in the suburbs, with their lovely green lawns and manicured flower beds. Now, yards are a completely common sight, which means frequent mowing and maintenance.
