Common heat pump problems

• Loss of Heat: Suddenly losing heat could be a sign of a serious issue with your heat pump, but there are also a few more benign explanations. If your thermostat is the wrong type, improperly wired, or simply turned off, this could be the reason for the issue. Similarly, a tripped circuit breaker could cut off power to the system. If none of these reasons appear to be the culprit, then you should have a heat pump repair contractor take a look immediately.

• Not Enough Heat: If your system is producing very little heat, it’s likely due to dirt or debris in the filter, coil, or fan reducing the airflow. Faulty valves or a blocked air duct could also block air flow.

• Blowing Cold Air in the Winter: A heat pump blowing cold air when set to produce heat could be a sign that your thermostat, compressor valves, or air handler is failing. However, it is not unusual for heat pumps to temporarily blow cold air when defrosting. Give your heat pump a little time before assuming there is a problem, but if the cold air persists, contact a professional.

• Odd Noises: A rattling sound might indicate that something is loose, so make sure that everything is screwed in tightly. If the sound is a rattling or squealing noise, turn off the heat pump and contact a professional right away. This type of sound often indicates a serious mechanical issue.
