Common problems with electric baseboard heaters

• Blocked Heat: Electric baseboard heaters work by radiating heat throughout the room, but this means furniture, drapes, and other items can potentially block some of this radiated heat. If your heater doesn’t seem to be producing much heat, try to make sure there is free space around the system.

• Electrical malfunctions: If your system is not turning on, this could be an issue with the electrical system. After checking to make sure the issue is not due to your circuit breaker or a loose plug, contact a qualified contractor to take a look. Often the issue is a broken fuse and can be fixed by replacing the fuse box.

• Burning smell: While a slight burning smell is not necessarily a sign of trouble, it could be a sign of dirt or dust build up if the smell sticks around for a while. If you think this is the case, turn off the system, disconnect it, let it cool, and then carefully clean the heater according to the manufacturer's instructions.

• Smoke: While rare, if you notice smoke coming from your system, turn it off immediately and contact a qualified baseboard heating repair contractor. This is a serious fire hazard and likely a sign of internal damage to the wiring or other components.
