Composite Deck Repair

Seeing Damage to your Composite Deck? Here’s How To Fix It.

Despite what you might believe about the incredible material, even composite decking can become vulnerable over time and need some extra love and care.

You may have heard the term “Composite Decking” before, but it’s likely that you have a different idea of what the material is. The word “composite” is used for many different materials, based on the company selling or manufacturing them. Some sell “composite” decking that is entirely plastic or wood wrapped in plastic, and a number of other combinations of materials. Due to this, the repair of a composite deck can sometimes involve some preliminary research.

Sometimes though, the damage isn’t a huge deal. Discoloration issues, for instance, only require periodic cleanings, as few as once a year, and most washes will do well with the boards. Heavy grime can be cleaned off with a degreaser of some kind, but you should contact the manufacturer to find out if you can powerwash the decking.

In the sun, the boards will fade like any other material, but will still retain most of its color over time. Scratches are common and most composite materials are prone to them, however, the solutions can vary based on material and product line. Some manufacturers recommend leaving the scratches as they are and wait for them to blend together over time, while others suggest the use of a soldering iron to remove scratches from specific areas.

If the boards themselves have taken some damage and you notice chips or small cracks, the boards can usually be repaired with a repair kit. Repair kits are often wax or epoxy-based filler that can be applied to a damaged board, much like wood-putty. Heavier damage may necessitate the replacement of the board.
