Crawl Space Insulation & Vapor Barrier in Louisa, VA
Moisture and high humidity in this crawl space resulted in mold and mildew growth and damage to the insulation. The homeowner wanted to encapsulate the space, so our team set to work cleaning out the crawl space, air sealing vents, the rim band, sill plate, and any other openings through the foundation wall to the outside. They treated the microbial growth with an antimicrobial, installed a new CleanSpace Vapor Barrier, applied Foam Board insulation to the foundation walls, and installed a dehumidifier to regulate the relative humidity.

Dehumidifying a Louisa, VA Crawl Space
After sealing and insulating this crawl space, we need to make sure we control the relative humidity. This is achieved by installing a dehumidifier with a hygrometer. The dehumidifier will be set to cut to on when the humidity reaches about 55% our goal is to prevent it from getting high enough that microbial growth can occur in the crawl space. We don't want the space to be too dry either because that can be damaging to the home's structure as well. A hygrometer is provided to the homeowner that allows them to monitor the temperature and relative humidity in the crawl space from inside their home.

Sealing Up a Louisa, VA Crawl Space Floors
These homeowners in Louisa wanted to encapsulate the crawl space on their newly constructed home. The exposed dirt flooring of the crawl space would continue to allow the earth's moisture to rise into the crawl space unless covered and sealed. The moisture rising from the earth can increase the relative humidity of the crawl space, which can then lead to mold growth, condensation, and moisture damage to certain materials. We placed a 10-mil CleanSpace vapor barrier over the dirt flooring to help protect the crawl space from the rising moisture. This liner gets wrapped around all pillars and is mechanically sealed to the foundation walls six to eight inches above outside grade. Any seams and gaps are sealed with a unique vinyl tape. The vapor barrier will help to prevent moisture from elevating the relative humidity, and it gives the crawl space a brighter and cleaner aesthetic.

Keeping moisture out of a Beaverdam, VA Crawl Space
All crawl space vents, the sill plate, and any penetrations to the outside through the foundation walls are all sealed. The rim band is insulated and sealed with spray foam insulation to stop air infiltration, which can also help with drafts in the first level of the home. The crawl space is also sealed off from the earth's moisture with a CleanSpace vapor barrier, which is sealed at all seams, wrapped and sealed around all piers, and attached and sealed to the foundation walls. All of these steps are taken to keep as much moisture out of the crawl space as possible so we can control the relative humidity and protect the substructure of the home.

Montpelier, VA - Crawl Space Mold
Mold needs warm temperatures, high relative humidity and organic material to grow. In our area, crawl spaces create the perfect environment for this. We did a physical wipe down of the joists with an antimicrobial to kill and remove the mold growing on the wood.

Montpelier, VA - Crawl Space Insulation
Fiberglass Batts between the joists absorb moisture like a sponge. They hold moisture against the wood joists and fall and sag over time. Their paper backing and the wood floor joists are organic material that often has mold growing on them. We removed the old insulation and installed new, foam board insulation on the crawl space walls.

Montpelier, VA - CleanSpace Encapsulation System
Previously, this crawl space had a 6-mil lightweight vapor barrier that was torn and even missing in places. We installed the CleanSpace Encapsulation System. The CleanSpace vapor barrier is a heavy-duty 20-mil liner that is perfect for crawl spaces that have service persons working on equipment, plumbing, or electrical, or for storage. It resists rips and tears, and is fastened to the walls and wrapped around piers sealing the earth off from the home.

Insulating and Sealing a Montpelier, VA Crawl Space
This homeowner in Montpelier was having moisture issues within the crawl space of their home. As a result of the excessive outside influence, their home was uncomfortable and the energy bills were high. We encapsulated their crawl space using a CleanSpace Light vapor barrier to help seal off the earth's moisture from the crawl space. Then, we sprayed an inch and a half of closed-cell R-10 spray foam over the foundation walls. All penetrations and vents are also sealed, and the spray foam acts as an air barrier and vapor retarder, protecting the crawl space from the outside influence. With their crawl space encapsulated and insulated, the homeowner should enjoy a much more comfortable home with lower energy bills.
