Prevent home fires with regular chimney inspections

Also known as fireplace inspections, chimney service inspections, or condition reports, are one of the most important home services for a homeowner to keep up to date. The National Fire Protection Association states that “Inspections of all chimneys, fireplaces, and vents should be done annually, as they can reveal costly, and possibly even dangerous problems in your home.”

The effects of a chimney fire are devastating and could lead to the total loss of your home. To avoid this, the National Fire Protection Association has implemented three levels of inspections that should take place at various times throughout the life of a building.

All homes are required to undergo thorough inspections upon the sale or transfer of a property, and this includes a routine chimney inspection.

• Level One inspections are recommended when your fireplace, chimney, and venting system are easily accessible. These inspections are performed in most homes.
• Level Two inspections should be performed when there is a new home heating appliance, after the malfunction of an appliance, or an external event that could have caused damage to the home. These inspections differ from Level One inspections in that the technicians will also inspect accessible areas of your attic, crawl space, and basement.
• Level Three inspections are likely to be performed when a Level One or Two inspection suggests that there could be a potentially hazardous problem within the home. These inspections are generally necessary when there has been damage done to the fireplace, chimney, or building.
