What kind of damage should you watch for?

Depending on the material of your awning, different damage can occur, necessitating different kinds of care. Canvas and other types of fabric-covered awnings frequently see stains from bird droppings, rips and tears from animals and falling debris. Even small holes are a cause for concern, as, if left unattended, the damage could spread and destroy the whole awning. Mildew is another frequent issue as even weather-resistant fabric can become vulnerable if not properly washed and attended to.

Retractable awnings have many working parts, and if any of them fail, the whole awning is at risk. The machinery should be inspected and if necessary, replaced yearly. If left to the wayside, the awning could become stuck in one position, making it impossible to roll out or up.

Another common material for awnings is metal, typically copper, aluminum, or steel. With these materials, the main concern is rust and dents in the awning. Though a small dent may not seem like a huge deal, it can open the door to rust. To repair an issue like this, and indeed most issues with your awning, it is best to contact your local awning contractor, as it is required to climb onto the roof for any repairs or adjustments.
