Before you decide on an attic conversion, there are some things to consider. Building codes and space requirements will be your largest worry, though building codes vary based on location. You might be wondering, well, what are the regulations? Most building codes correspond to an edition of the Internal Residential Code for One and Two-Story Dwellings. To pass the space, it has to be at least seventy square feet, with ceilings at least five feet or above in height, a window to provide natural light, and at least 50% of the usable space must have ceilings that are at least seven feet. One way to accomplish this kind of space would be to install a dormer.

Your finished attic must also be accessible by a set of stairs that lead to a standard doorway, and you might have to furnish the space with heating and cooling systems if they are not already in place. The code requires that the space maintain a base temperature of at least 68 degrees, so insulation is also needed to make the attic comfortable during the colder months.
