• Heat Gun- Mostly effective only on smooth surfaces that don’t have a shellac, varnish, or polyurethane finish to them. This method includes peeling off any flaking parts of the paint first, then going in with a heat gun to make the paint sizzle up in order to scrape it off with a scraper. Again, proper safety equipment must be worn in order to prevent possible injury.
• Sanding- Sanding is the method of using sandpaper on painted surfaces and only works well on oil-based paints. If used on water-based paints, the paint will just clog the sandpaper up. This process will require using specific sandpaper grits to remove the desired amount of paint and is usually an ongoing process until all the paint is removed.
• Hand Scraping and Wire Brush- Hand scraping is used best on small areas and where paint is already peeling or flaking. If used on surfaces where paint is still on solid, it could ruin the underlying surface by applying too much pressure to remove the paint. A wire brush is used to get any small corners or spaces that can’t be reached with a hand scrapper.
