Most of us have considered installing a home security system at one point or another. Perhaps there have been a few break-ins around the neighborhood. Maybe you want your family to feel more secure. Or, with so many options available to homeowners today, adding that layer of security just seems more accessible than before. Whatever sparked your interest, the experts at HomePro match have narrowed down a few meaningful statistics to keep you in the know.
- According to a study conducted in 2016 by UNC Charlotte, 83 percent of burglars check for security systems prior to entering a home
- Of those 83 percent, at least 60 percent of burglars surveyed said they would look for an alternative target if they did detect an on-site system
- According to the same study, more than half of burglars said if they discovered a security system during their break-ins, they would discontinue the attempt
These results were extracted from a pool of more than 400 convicted burglars, both male and female, interviewed by research experts at UNC. The study as a whole shows a strong link between the presence of home security systems and crime rate deterrence.
Another study based out of Rutgers in 2009 yielded similar findings. Rutgers researchers focused on eliminating other possible crime restraints to filter out the absolute effectiveness of alarm systems in residential crime deterrence. Highlights showed that indeed, neighborhoods with a high number of security systems per number of households faced fewer residential burglaries than neighborhoods with fewer alarms
According to Rutgers Today, "an installed burglar alarm makes a dwelling less attractive to the would-be and active intruders and protects the home without displacing burglaries to nearby homes."
The verdict is in - home security and alarm systems not only help law enforcement to intercept burglars, but even make burglars less likely to choose a home in the first place.
