A brief history of drywall

First invented in 1916 by the American Gypsum Corporation, drywall was intended to function with dual purpose: to compete with, and provide walling material other than the much more costly plaster of the day, and to help prevent house fires. In fact, the product when first introduced onto the market was helped along by its tagline of being “The Poor Man's Answer to Plaster Walls”.

Since those days, drywall has risen up and taken the market for walling materials, crowding out the old favorites of plaster and luxurious wooden paneling. These new dry-walled surfaces could be painted multiple times, allowing for versatility, and freedom from expensive and difficult to handle wallpaper. Eventually, drywall and a coat of paint would be the main way of decorating walls, as it is today.
