Barns: an enduring tradition

At the dawn of human history, we were little more than animals ourselves--surviving in hunter-gatherer clans, roaming the land after packs of animals. When climates began to change, we sought a new way of life. Slowly, and over many years, we became advanced civilizations, built off the great and ancient trade of agriculture. As we grew in population, so did our farmlands, necessitating a need for storage, both for livestock and for food that was harvested. From this need came the first barns.

The barns that most of us are familiar with today originated in England around the beginning of the Renaissance, which changed the building traditions from the Old Norman ways to something that we would be vaguely familiar with today.

Now, there are a variety of different types of modern barns, including:

• Dutch Style Barns
• Bank Barns
• English Barns
• Pole Barns
• Round Barns
• Prairie Barns

Some barns are a continuation of older styles, such as Dutch and English barns, which were the most commonly seen in America before the 1800s. But, just as with older barns, new barns can still face some issues over time, no matter their style.

Of course, issues with a Pole barn will differ greatly from issues with a timber frame structure, but can be just as serious nonetheless. Just a few of these issues could include:
