While you should have a qualified contractor inspect your hot water baseboard heating system regularly, there are some things you can do to make sure your system continues to operate smoothly:

• Clean: The easiest way to prevent problems is with regular cleaning. Dust and debris can gradually take their toll if ignored. Be especially wary of kids or pets hiding items in the radiator. Dust is not as serious an issue, but it can produce an unpleasant burning smell if left uncleaned for a long time.

• Remove Obstructions: If you have radiators in a room, you need to make sure they have enough space. There should be about 12 inches between the radiator and any furniture, curtains, or other obstructions. This is especially important with curtains since they can be a fire hazard if they are too close to the radiator.

• End of Season Maintenance: You want to make sure your heating system is working when the winter comes around, so it’s a good idea to have the system checked during the spring. Ideally, this should be done by a professional, but there are some things you can do yourself, like vacuuming the unit and covering it for the off season.
