Common gas boiler issues

• Low pressure: Gas boilers depend on water pressure for optimal heating and if the pressure is below 1, the system is unlikely to function properly. This low pressure is often due to a water leak and you should have the system inspected by a professional as soon as possible.

• Cold radiators: Sludge and air sometimes build up in your radiators and this can prevent heat from travelling properly, resulting in parts of your radiator that are still cold. The solution is often to bleed the radiator.

• Odd noises: Loud noises like whistling, banging, or gurgling can indicate potential problems with your system ranging from low water pressure to faulty pumps. Particularly loud squealing noises (almost like a boiling tea kettle) could be a sign of kettling, which refers to when sludge or lime builds up in your system and blocks waterflow, causing some areas to overheat. This is often caused by hard water and will need to be fixed by a professional.

• Leaking: A leak can have a surprising amount of causes, ranging from broken internal components to high boiler pressure. If you notice a leak, have your system inspected right away to identify the cause and fix the issue.
