While quite versatile and resilient, carpet can sometimes get damaged or buckle. Areas with heavy traffic can tear apart and wear off. Moving heavy furniture around or exposing your carpet to a lot of moisture can cause it to ripple and buckle.

What causes carpets to ripple and buckle?

The number one cause of carpet ripples is moisture. Consistent exposure to moisture or a flooding incident can loosen the carpet, as well as the padding and deform its fibers, resulting in ripples and buckles. Carpet in areas that are prone to moisture such as basements, bathrooms, and floors above vented crawl spaces tend to soak up moisture and lose its shape and grip. Depending on the fiber and material used for the padding, the wet carpet will also become very prone to mold growth and smells. That’s why if the carpet is installed in a humid environment, the best course of action is to address the moisture source. Things like sealing your crawl space, improving drainage in the basement and using a dehumidifier can go a long way when it comes to keeping your carpet dry. If you steam your carpet often, make sure it is thoroughly dry afterward, or have it professionally cleaned.

Can I fix the carpet ripples myself?

While you can rent or purchase the equipment to stretch and refasten your carpet, it is a labor-intense process better left to professionals with the experience and knowledge to deliver great results. Before the professionals come in, you should declutter the room, remove knick-knacks, books and other items that may get damaged or lost. Most carpet repair companies will require that at least 50% of the furniture, especially the heaviest pieces be removed. Some companies will move the furniture for an extra fee, some will do it as a complimentary service.
