Save your door, replace the glass

Patio doors and other exterior doors often have glass windows installed in them. Like normal windows, there is always the risk that the glass might break. When that does happen, homeowners might just assume that the door is done for and start looking for a replacement. This is often a mistake as the glass panels in the door can be replaced with the right equipment and the right level of expertise.

Many modern doors allow for a quick and easy replacement. The frames that hold the glass in place can be removable or adjustable. In other cases, especially with older doors, the entire thing would have to be taken apart. This process would have to be done very carefully to avoid damaging the door. Unless you are skilled with carpentry, you should consider hiring a professional.

How do you replace the glass in a door?

Even if the door makes replacing the glass easy, you will still need to find the right glass panel. Pre-made panels do exist, but working with, and moving them can be dangerous. If the weight of the glass is shifted in the wrong direction too quickly, the window could break. If a pre-made panel cannot be used, you will have to make one. The glass will have to be carefully measured and then cut with expert precision.

Most homeowners do not even have the equipment necessary to cut glass. The process of measuring the glass before it is cut can also be confusing. If you have a door that doesn’t already have a window in it, you will have to make alterations to the door as well. The ordeal and frustration is just not worth it when you can easily contact your local window and door contractor!
