Chimney Liners

Installing Chimney Liners help to prevent house fires.

Studies conducted by the National Bureau of Standards for Durability in the 1940s and again in the 1980s concluded that to build a chimney without a liner “classifies as little less than criminal.”

The main purpose of your chimney liner is to protect the home from the combustion process. It is instrumental in protecting the homes building materials from the heat of combustion. It was found during NBSD tests that the lack of a liner allowed heat to move through the chimney so quickly that woodwork around the hearth caught fire in as little as three hours. The liner also protects the masonry from corrosive byproducts that come with burning fuel.

What liner material best fits my home?

Chimney liners can be designed from three main materials: clay, metal, or ceramic.

Clay tiles are the most common type of liner as they are inexpensive and readily available. However, they cannot adequately contain the liquid byproducts of combustion that are produced by modern gas appliances.

Metal chimney liners are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum and are primarily installed as upgrades and repairs to existing chimneys. When properly installed and maintained, metal liners are incredibly safe and durable. It is usually required that high-temperature insulation be installed in conjunction with a metal liner for safety and performance reasons.

Ceramic or Cast-in-Place liners are made up of a lightweight, cement-like product installed inside of the chimney for a smooth, seamless, insulated passageway for the combustion gases. These liners can even improve the structural integrity of an aging chimney and are suitable for all fuel types!
