The fundamental purpose of a window well is to provide sunlight to a basement that is completely below grade, while providing a space for the window to sit and have access to the outside. Window wells are a must-have in most basement finishing projects because, without windows, basements simply have much less utility as living spaces.

In some cases, such as if the basement is being converted into a full-time living space, safety codes require that the window well meet specific dimensions to allow for an egress exit. This egress exit must be put in place as an emergency exit to ensure you and your family have a safe route if anything may occur. Codes vary based on the city and state that you live in, but all egress windows must comply with four International Residential Code Criteria. There must also be a ladder or climbable wall in all egress window wells.

Another important piece of the window well system is the cover. Since a window well is essentially a large hole in the ground, it's possible for things to fall down into it; such as water, leaves, animals and even people! There’s also the possibility that if enough water gets into the window well, it could put pressure and rot out the window, allowing water into the basement.
