Most of the time when there is standing water in the crawl space, the installation of a sump pump is suggested. Though there are other ways to deal with water, the best thing to do is get it away from vulnerable supports and out of the home as fast as possible. You don’t want the chance of mold or mildew to begin spreading.

Many crawl spaces are built with a “low point drain” installed at the lowest point of the space, but it is often installed in the wrong spot or has become clogged over the years. By trenching around the perimeter of the space and installing a sump pump, the water will make its way up and out of the house through a discharge pipe, draining away to a low part of the property, or out underground a fair distance from the foundation.

How a Crawl Space Sump Pump Works

A typical installation begins with digging a hole at the lowest point of the crawl space for the sump crock to rest in. This hole is usually about 2-3 feet deep, the bottom covered by a thin layer of gravel for better drainage. Then the crock will be installed, surrounded by another layer of gravel. A pump will be plumbed in and backflow valve added to the discharge point that will take the water away from the home.

The process is fairly simple and incredibly reliable. There are battery-powered-back-up-pumps available too to deal with unforeseeable events such as power outages. Like any other household appliance, your sump pump will need maintenance, and eventually, a replacement will be needed once the pump has run the course of its functional life. Most pumps come with extended warranties, so issues with the pump should always be covered.
